Louisiana Gov. Blanco declares secession from the US
Baton Rouge (September 11, 2005) – Angered at the “lackluster and despicable assistance from the federal government during the Katrina disaster” Louisiana Governor Blanco announced this morning that she will introduce emergency legislation to make the secession of Louisiana from the US possible. She claimed that “all Democrats and a majority of the Republicans” in the state legislature were supporting this move. Gov. Blanco said she planned to rename Louisiana the “Socialistic Republic of Bayou” to reflect the heritage and the political background of this region. Asked what would happen if this plan failed, Gov. Blanco revealed for the first time that she had been in negotiation with France for more than a week with regard to a Louisiana buy-back. Although, a compromise on the selling price was close, rumored at only 50 millions Euro, the remaining sticking point was that “France’s president Chirac insisted on a 0 % down payment ” what was absolutely not acceptable for the Louisiana people at this point, where real money was needed now, the Governor said.
