The New York Times continues its decline

New York (October 20, 2005) – The once reputable New York Times continues to decline not only with respect to its journalistic value but also in pure economic terms. It posted a third-quarter net income drop by 52 %. Just last month, a reduction of 500 staff employees or 4 % of its total work force was announced. Following various journalistic scandals in the last few years, with Jayson Blair being the most famous for making up stuffs and reporting them as true stories, the current murky affair around Judith Miller's “journalistic martyrdom,” has driven the morale of the staff to a new low. However, a change in strategic direction with new editor in combination with a return to objective, non-partisan reporting, is unlikely under the current ownership.
