Dalai Lama appointed as presiding judge in DeLay trial

Travis County (November5, 2005) – After several unsuccessful attempts to find a non-partisan judge, Travis County prosecutor Ronnie Earle and lawyers for the former Republican House Majority Leader, Mr. Tom DeLay, have finally agreed on “The Holiness Dalai Lama,” the world spiritual leader of Buddhism, as the judge to preside over Mr. DeLay’s campaign finance trial. The first judge, Democrat Robert Perkins, was deemed too partisan and rejected because he had contributed money to the left-wing activist group “moveon.org,” whose primary purpose was to attack and defeat Mr. DeLay. A second judge, B.B. Schraub, was then named to select a new presiding judge, but he also had to withdraw due to his political contributions to Republican candidates. On third try, the Texas State Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson selected Senior Judge Pat Priest, a Democrat, to preside over the DeLay’s trial. This selection was also in trouble because of now public connections between Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson and the Republican party. In light of this seemingly insurmountable difficulty, both sides now agreed to the selection of Dalai Lama as the presiding judge for Mr. DeLay’s trial. “The Holiness is, of course, more than willing” to help out, provided that a good “interpreter of Texan-English” could be at his disposal, a spokesman for the Dalai Lama said in a press release on Friday.
