New York (November 6, 2005) – CBS News was granted US patent no. 12,961,788 in an emergency review today for a novel polling technique that was used in the latest presidential approval poll. As reported earlier, a CBS News poll released early this week, showed that President Bush’s approval rating was down to 35 %. These results were achieved with the novel and highly creative polling technique developed by CBS News. In this poll, 936 persons were interviewed, consisting of 326 Democrats (35 %), 259 Republicans (28 %) and 351 Independents (37 %). However, using the new - now patented - polling “weighting” technique, CBS News systematically reduced the number of Republicans by 26 persons (- 10 %) and increased the number of Independents by 37 persons (+ 10 %) while keeping the number of Democrats constant. So, the so "corrected" polling sample now represented 35 % Democrats, 24 % Republicans and 41 % Independents. A spokesman for CBS News insisted that this mathematical model “reflected the truth” of the national electorate "better than the reality" as indicated by the exit poll during last year election, which showed 37 % Democrats, 37 % Republicans and 26 % Independents.
