Halloween: White House open for trick-or-treat

Washington DC (October 31, 2005) – President Bush has signed an executive order, to open the White House for the first time in American history for the Halloween“trick-or-treat” today. Embracing the century-old Irish and Celtic tradition, President Bush and the whole White House staff will wear costumes and distribute candy from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Monday evening. After the recent bad weeks, which included the collapse of the Miers nomination for the Supreme Court and the indictments of House Majority leader Tom DeLay and top administration adviser Lewis Libby, President Bush hoped that “celebrating Halloween at the White House will scare political evil spirits away.” Reacting to this surprise event, Senate Democratic leader Senator Harry Reid, D-Nevada, complained that once again, the Bush administration “gave in to pressure of the religious right” and blurred the separation of “state and religion.”
