Democrats offer own bird flu plan together with PETA

Washington DC (November3, 2005) – Two days after President Bush presented a $ 7.1 billion plan to tackle a potential bird flu pandemic in the US, the Democrats offered their own plan today with a quite different emphasis. The Bush administration "once again" is using the flu as an excuse to “shamelessly enrich the Big Pharma,” Senator Kennedy said in a press conference today. “Our first priority should be to protect endangered species involved in this tragedy like chicken, turkey and goose, not to feed more tax payer money to the big, rich pharmaceutical companies,” added Senator Hillary Clinton at the same press conference. For this reason, the Senate Democrats will submit a two billion dollars legislation next week, so that FEMA could build state-wide“organic, self-sustaining housing shelters” for all birds in the US that might be infected with the H5N1 virus. Both Democratic senators nominated Ms. Ingrid Newkirk, president of the powerful Norfolk-based organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), as the Federal Project Manager, in charge of building and operating these "FEMA bird shelters."
